The Full Story
2023 Janefield Wetlands Trial
We built our own floating wetland. Let us share it with you!

Mission
The first island installed and designed by Fytogreen has been a great success however their design was predominately for water quality management.
Whilst it has also been used at a sanctuary for the wildlife, our team has noticed some flaws in the design that could be improved to suit our wildlife.
Vision
After monitoring Janefield Wetlands our team has assessed what could have been improved in the original design and have therefore designed a new floating island that may be more accomodating to our wildlife.

The Plan
When first installed there was netting over the island for 4 months so the plants could get established first. Due to this we had wildlife getting caught up in the netting.
Our solution for this is to use no netting and to plant more established plants rather than tube stock.
It would be prefereable to have no tethers that could create risk to wildlife underwater.
Early Successes
On the 7th October 2023 the floating habitat was installed in Janefield Wetlands.
In less than 24 hours we have had many cormorants enjoying the resting space as well as moorhens and other duck species.
On day 2 the locals were entertained with 2 cormorants fighting over a large goldfish.
Sadly these goldfish have been dumped into the wetlands and are an ongoing issue here.
Conservation Victoria endeavours to help assist with the removal of this non indigeinvasive species.
